AI to analyze 1.6 million brain scans to predict dementia risk by Theguardian.com

Researchers from the Universities of Edinburgh and Dundee will use artificial intelligence to analyze over a million brain scans to develop a tool to predict dementia risk. This project is part of the global NEURii initiative and will focus on CT and MRI images from Scottish patients collected over a decade.

The research team will apply AI techniques to cross-reference imaging data with health records to identify patterns that could help doctors more accurately assess dementia risk. Ultimately, the digital tools developed could enable radiologists to detect the disease earlier and improve diagnosis.

Additionally, these tools could contribute to developing more targeted and effective treatments. Up to 1.6 million images will be examined, with the approval of Scottish health authorities, and the data will be securely stored in the Scottish National Safe Haven, a platform dedicated to research.
