Advanced Media Content

Most of tomorrow’s media formats tend to increase the sense of immersion into the content. Transforming the end-user/consumer’s experience by putting them into the middle of the action or information is the challenge, especially whenever narrative aspects are key.

It’s being seen in all forms of media: Television, movies, games, advertising, training, collaborative work, monitoring, industrial signage, the Web, etc.

The Advanced Media Content lab is building tools that enable the creation, storage, transportation, and sharing both for and by as many people as possible. It delivers expertise and technologies related to innovative dimensions of images (resolution, depth, color, light, etc.), sound (spatialized), and new rendering devices (screen, projection, AR/VR head-mounted displays with 3 or 6 degrees of freedom, etc.). It develops tools and solutions aimed at enabling the adoption of these future formats by industry professionals, and ultimately by end consumers. Holography and compression systems are key areas of expertise for the laboratory.

Model Selection CNN-based VVC Quality Enhancement

Artifact removal and filtering methods are inevitable parts of video coding. On one hand, new codecs and compression standards come with advanced in-loop filters and on the other hand, displays are equipped with high capacity processing units for post-treatment of decoded videos. This paper proposes a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based post-processing algorithm for intra and inter frames of…

JPEG Pleno holography: scope and technology validation procedures

JPEG Pleno is a standardization framework addressing the compression and signaling of plenoptic modalities. While the standardization of solutions to handle light field content is currently reaching its final stage, the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) committee is now preparing for the standardization of solutions targeting point cloud and holographic modalities. This paper addresses the…

Compression and reconstruction of extremely-high resolution holograms based on hologram-lightfield transforms

Holography is often considered as the most promising 3D visualization technique, creating virtual images indistinguishable from the real ones. However, one the main barrier to the adoption of holographic displays in wide 3D viewing systems is the very large amount of information contained in a hologram. Indeed, a hologram with a large size and wide viewing angle contains terabytes of data, urging…

Scalable Video Coding for Backward-Compatible 360° Video Delivery Over Broadcast Networks

Recently, the coding and transmission of immersive 360 • video has been intensely studied. The technologies provided by standards developing organizations mainly address requirements coming from over-the-top services. The terrestrial broadcast remains in many countries the mainstream medium to deliver high quality contents to a wide audience. To enable seamless introduction of immersive 360 •…
