A new collaboration with Altera (part of Intel) for a solution to convert SDR content to HDR.

For the IBC show in Amsterdam, b<>com will be presenting unique technology to enable the broadcast industry with HDR support through Altera FPGAs. Altera® operates as the Programmable Solutions Group (PSG) within Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), following its acquisition by Intel in 2015. Altera’s programmable solutions enable designers of electronic systems to rapidly and cost effectively innovate, differentiate and win in their markets.
This b<>com technology was first introduced at the NAB Show this year. It was successful because it is filling the gap for content distributors who want to use the HDR format right away. Six months later, thanks to the collaboration with Altera, b<>com is offering a real-time solution that runs on an FPGA.
A live demonstration of the SDR to HDR up-conversion technology will be shown on the Intel booths (Hall 5 - B65).
According to Ludovic Noblet, Hypermedia Director at b<>com: “This technological solution has become necessary due to the emergence of "all-HDR" video, which is recognized as increasing the contrast, color saturation, and feeling of depth in HD and Ultra HD images. Although Ultra HD TV is being rolled out gradually, little content is or will be produced in HDR and therefore available for distribution. At the same time, the first HDR-compatible screens for consumers have been entering homes since 2015”.
For Ben Cope, Strategic marketing video systems, Altera: “In a collaboration with b<>com we have been able to demonstrate real-time SDR to HDR conversion on an Altera FPGA device. Our comprehensive UHD video connectivity and processing IP portfolio provides the best choice for the latest video format conversion needs. Allowing customers to easily integrate conversion between HDR and SDR formats is an important augmentation to our portfolio.
